Back-to-back Champions League winners: can we now say PSG have a heavyweight shirt?

The term “heavyweight shirt” refers to clubs with a strong tradition in major competitions that do not crumble under pressure in the biggest matches. Real Madrid in the Champions League, Brazil in the World Cup, and Palmeiras, Grêmio, Flamengo and São Paulo in the Copa Libertadores are examples of this.

In Europe, several clubs are considered to have a heavyweight shirt, including Barcelona, Manchester United, Juventus, Milan, Bayern and Liverpool. These are teams that have built a rich history in elite competitions such as the Champions League and have produced some incredible comebacks over the years.

PSG, on the other hand, have traditionally been viewed as having a “lightweight shirt.” The club famously collapsed against Barcelona after winning the first leg 4-0, only to lose 6-1 in the return match. They were also knocked out of the Champions League at home by United, with Buffon making costly mistakes, and let a lead slip away at the Santiago Bernabéu amid defensive errors.

Now, however, the Parisian club’s standing in European football has improved. After defeating Arsenal on penalties, PSG secured their second consecutive Champions League title, moving beyond the label of a club without tradition, although they remain some distance from the competition’s greatest champions.

There is no doubt that the French side has developed greater resilience in the Champions League, thanks not only to its two trophies but also to countless appearances and several near misses. It is reasonable to expect that the team will no longer falter on major European nights, but it would still be premature to place them on the same level as Bayern, Real Madrid or Liverpool.

PSG are gradually shedding their reputation as a punchline in European football and moving closer to cementing their place among the world’s elite clubs. Two consecutive Champions League titles have certainly accelerated that process…
